How To End An Online Relationship

Well, you met online...and were attracted to each other immediately. The two of you emailed and I.M. all day long...it's a wonder neither of you lost your jobs!

You both rush home after work; complete the household chores and errands as soon as possible...anticipating the nightly phone call. The call where the two of you are actually dozing off and on around 3 AM. You just can't get enough of each other...

Then for some strange, unknown reason something goes very wrong. But you are unsure how to end an online relationship...

First, try to end it by telephone. Don't allow the normal "pleasantries" at the beginning of the conversation. Be very straight forward, "I need to talk to you about something important. Is this a good time?" Timing is crucial! You don't want to have this conversation prior to a business presentation, or an outing with the children.

If you are sure about your decision, it is not open for discussion. State the facts, your feelings, and say it is over in the politest way possible. Do not try to "soften" the blow with, "maybe we can still keep in touch..." "You can still come and visit with the dogs..."

Trust me...leaving the door open doesn't work.

When you are trying to end an online relationship that is what you must say in no uncertain terms. Followed by, "Please do not contact me anymore."

There is a good chance an argument will start. In that case, simply say "this conversation is over. "and hang up the phone. If you continue to receive phone calls, do not take them. If you continue to receive emails, respond only once, again asking them to stop contacting you. From that point on, you will need to block them.

Before ending an online relationship, please be sure this is what you want to do and not a silly "power play" just to get a reaction. If you are sure, do not waver. If you do, you will have to start all over again. That is unfair to everyone...
